Chief Technology Officer — NorthShield Group
About NorthShield Group
NorthShield Group is a Norwegian deep-tech company developing Aethera™, a modular Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) platform engineered for industrial-scale deployment. Aethera™ integrates MOF-based adsorption systems, vacuum-driven desorption cycles, piezoelectric actuation, membrane separation, and AI-driven process control into a unified, scalable architecture.
The company is backed by institutional research relationships and is transitioning from architectural definition into structured pilot validation and early industrial deployment. NorthShield Group is building with a global footprint and a long-term mandate to become a defining force in the industrial CCU landscape.
The Role
We are looking for a Chief Technology Officer of rare calibre.
This is not a role for someone looking to manage an established system. It is a founding technical mandate, the opportunity to take a complex, multi-domain CCU architecture and drive it from validated design through pilot execution to industrial deployment.
The CTO will be the primary owner of all technical direction at NorthShield Group. You will define how Aethera™ is built, what gets validated, how the system integrates, and what the path to scale looks like. You will work in direct partnership with the CEO and leadership team, and your decisions will shape the technical identity of the company for decades.
We are seeking the best technical mind available in the global CCU and advanced materials space. If that is you, we want to hear from you.
What You Will Own
- Full technical ownership of Aethera™: system configuration, component integration, and design definition across adsorption, thermal, mechanical, and control domains
- Design and execution of pilot programmes, including test protocols, validation frameworks, and performance benchmarks
- Technical roadmap from current architectural stage through pilot validation to industrial-scale deployment
- Build-vs-partner decisions across all technical domains
- Identification and management of external research and engineering partners (universities, national labs, engineering firms)
- Construction of NSG's initial technical team over time
- IP strategy and technical positioning as the system matures
- Alignment between technical development, capital strategy, and commercial pathways
Candidate Profile
We are looking for someone who is exceptional, technically, intellectually, and in terms of their capacity to build under uncertainty.
Required:
- Deep expertise in one or more of the following: carbon capture and utilisation, chemical and process engineering, advanced materials science, MOF-based systems, vacuum or pressure-swing adsorption, membrane separation, or related industrial technology domains
- 10+ years of relevant experience, with a clear track record of taking technology from concept or pilot stage into real-world deployment
- Strong system-level thinking across multiple technical disciplines simultaneously
- Experience designing and executing pilot or demonstration programmes
Highly valued:
- Direct experience with MOF synthesis, characterisation, or process integration
- Background in piezoelectric systems, actuator technology, or precision mechanical systems
- Exposure to industrial plant design, EPC environments, or large-scale infrastructure projects
- Experience bridging academic research environments and industrial application
Who you are:
- A builder — you create clarity and structure where neither exists
- Technically fearless, but pragmatic in execution
- Capable of holding the full system in your head while solving individual component problems
- Motivated by impact, not by comfort
- Long-term in orientation, high in ownership
Where We Are
We believe in full transparency about stage:
- Aethera™ is currently defined at architectural and system level
- Underlying technologies, MOF adsorption, vacuum-driven desorption, piezoelectric actuation, membrane separation, are independently proven in research and industrial contexts
- No pilot has yet been executed as a unified system under NorthShield Group
- Initial technical development and external input have been conducted in collaboration with academic and applied research institutions
The next chapter is structured validation through pilot programmes, followed by industrial scaling. This role exists to lead that transition, from first principles through to deployment at scale.
Compensation
This position carries a significant equity allocation, reflecting its founding-level strategic importance.
NorthShield Group is pre-revenue and in active capital formation. Initial compensation is therefore primarily equity-based. Cash compensation will be introduced as the company reaches defined operational and financial milestones.
This structure is intentional. We are building for the long term, and we are looking for someone who thinks the same way. The equity on offer reflects that.
Why This Role
The convergence of MOF-based materials science, advanced process engineering, and industrial-scale CCU deployment is one of the most technically demanding and commercially significant challenges in the energy transition.
Very few people in the world have the combination of scientific depth, engineering breadth, and builder instinct this role requires.
If you are one of them, this is the role that will define your career.
Location
Flexible. We are building globally and will consider the strongest candidate regardless of geography. As the company moves into pilot and deployment phases, the role will evolve toward key operational environments.
