It has important responsibilities related to patient care, infection control, emergency preparedness, and national reference functions.

The Department has integrated hospital and academic functions, and plays an important role in research, teaching, and training of physicians, biomedical laboratory scientists, and students. The Department is, and has been, the host of a Centre of Excellence, and was assessed as “outstanding quality” in the Research Council’s recent evaluation of Medicine and Health.

Part of the Hospital of the Future – with the Life Sciences Building on the Horizon

The Department is in an exciting development phase, with consolidation of operations at Rikshospitalet and Ullevål, and relocation to the Life Sciences Building in 2027.

This will become the largest centre for life sciences, chemistry, and pharmacy in the Nordics, and will create unique opportunities for collaboration between clinic, research, and education. As leader, you will play a central role in realizing the department’s place in this new building – and help shape the future of laboratory medicine, where groundbreaking technology, interdisciplinary collaboration, and patient-proximal innovation are at the core.

The Department of Microbiology has diagnostic operations at Oslo University Hospital’s Rikshospitalet and Ullevål sites, which in January 2027 will be co-located in the new Life Sciences Building. The Department has hospital and university functions integrated in the operations, and performs laboratory-based infectious disease diagnostics for hospitalized patients at Oslo hospitals and from primary care. In addition, it handles infection control for blood donors and transplantation donors. The repertoire of analyses is large, and approximately 1.5 million analyses are carried out annually. The Department has a broad diagnostic repertoire in bacteriology, virology, infection serology, mycology, and parasitology, and has several regional responsibilities and national reference functions, including diagnostics related to HIV, syphilis, cytomegalovirus, toxoplasmosis, medical mycology, molecular parasitology, and viral import diseases. See also the department’s website.

The department has 23.5 physician positions, 18.5 senior consultants and 5 training positions for physicians (physicians in specialization, medical microbiology). Three of the senior consultants have adjunct positions at UiO; in addition, we have three senior consultant positions in adjunct roles whose main positions are as Professors at UiO.

**The Department is organized into eight sections:** Medicine; Bacteriology; Molecular Diagnostics, Virology and Serology; Research; Development; Control and Production; Sample Reception; Quality, IT and Operational Support. The environment is professionally exciting, educational, and at times fast-paced.
